New Specialized Crux goes all in on aero gravel, with a 15-watt improvement, new geometry, and lighter builds

Specialized has unveiled the all-new Crux 5, signalling a decisive shift away from its cyclo-cross roots towards a dedicated aero gravel racing platform. The latest iteration boasts significant aerodynamic improvements, with a claimed 15.2-watt reduction in drag compared to its predecessor. Alongside this, the Crux 5 offers increased tyre clearance up to 55mm, allowing for greater versatility on varied terrain, and lighter complete builds starting from 6.9kg, thanks to new wheels and a one-piece cockpit design. The geometry has been revised with a longer wheelbase, slacker head tube, and steeper seat tube, prioritising gravel performance over traditional cyclo-cross characteristics. Drawing inspiration from the Tarmac SL8, the Crux 5 shares certain visual cues such as dropped seat stays and an aero seat post, but it is fundamentally a new design with bespoke tube shapes, updated cockpit, and enhanced drivetrain clearance. The bike is now 1x drivetrain only but remains compatible with mechanical groupsets, reflecting a focus on simplicity and reliability in gravel racing. Despite the frame itself gaining some weight due to aero optimisations, the overall package is lighter, highlighting Specialized’s commitment to balancing speed, comfort, and responsiveness on rough surfaces. Specialized has also introduced what it calls the "Equation of Speed," a data-driven approach to optimising bike performance that incorporates physics principles beyond traditional metrics. Using telemetry devices fitted to their gravel team’s bikes, the brand has collected extensive data on factors such as surface roughness and rider positioning to simulate race conditions with precision. This allows for tailored equipment choices based on course profiles, including frame selection, wheel choice, and tyre setup, aiming to deliver the best possible performance in real-world gravel racing scenarios. In terms of aerodynamic testing, Specialized has challenged conventional methods by emphasising the importance of wind angle distributions more relevant to cycling rather than automotive standards. The company notes that typical wind tunnel protocols, which often derive from truck testing at higher wind heights, do not accurately reflect the conditions experienced by cyclists closer to the ground. By refining these testing parameters, Specialized aims to produce more realistic and applicable aero data, ultimately benefiting riders seeking marginal gains in gravel racing. The new Crux 5 is already making appearances in competitive settings, such as the Gralloch event in Scotland, and is expected to be prominent at major gravel races like Unbound Gravel. With its combination of aerodynamic efficiency, lightweight construction, and gravel-focused geometry, the Crux 5 positions itself as a leading contender in the evolving gravel bike market, signalling a clear direction for Specialized’s future in off-road racing.
