New Open WI.DE 2.0 takes gravel clearances to a whole new level with provision for gargantuan 66mm tyres

Summary By: eMotoX
Swiss manufacturer Open has unveiled the WI.DE 2.0, a groundbreaking gravel bike designed to accommodate exceptionally wide tyres up to 66mm (2.6 inches), significantly expanding the limits of gravel bike tyre clearance. Building on the original WI.DE’s reputation for radical design and large 61mm tyre clearance, the new model nearly doubles the air volume within the tyres, enabling riders to tackle terrain previously considered unrideable. Open’s approach prioritised the tyres first, then engineered the frame around them to maximise volume and capability, marking a bold departure from conventional gravel bike design. The WI.DE 2.0 features a bespoke frame that eschews traditional two-by drivetrains in favour of a one-by setup, allowing for increased tyre clearance through a novel ‘double chainstay drop’ design. The frame’s geometry has been adjusted for enhanced off-road performance, with longer chainstays and a longer wheelbase to improve stability and control on technical terrain, while maintaining a slightly more upright riding position. Additional technical highlights include a deeper headtube, aerodynamic tubing, a 27.2mm round seatpost compatible with dropper posts, and internal cable routing, all contributing to a frame that balances stiffness, agility, and comfort. Open has also focused heavily on versatility and utility, equipping the WI.DE 2.0 with an extensive array of mounting points for bikepacking and cargo. The innovative ‘U-Turn AC/DC+’ fork combines aerodynamic design with cargo-carrying functionality, allowing riders to attach bags directly to the fork legs while retaining compatibility with cages and panniers. Multiple bosses on the frame enable the fitting of frame bags, water bottles, and other accessories, catering to long-distance and adventure riders seeking a highly adaptable platform. The new WI.DE 2.0 will be available in a range of finishes, including raw, ready-to-paint, and fully painted framesets, with prices starting at $3,200/€3,200. Two complete builds will also be offered, featuring high-end SRAM Force AXS and SRAM Red AXS groupsets paired with Zipp XPLR wheels, priced at $8,000/€8,000 and $10,200/€10,200 respectively. With this release, Open not only pushes the boundaries of gravel bike design but also signals a growing trend towards more extreme tyre sizes and versatile, adventure-ready machines within the evolving gravel cycling landscape.
