Mert Lawwill, Motorcycle and Mountain Bike Pioneer, Has Passed Away

Mert Lawwill, a celebrated figure in both motorcycle racing and mountain biking, has passed away at the age of 85 in Boise, Idaho. Lawwill was renowned for his achievements on the track, notably winning the 1969 Motorcycle Grand National Championship and competing for Harley-Davidson during a fiercely competitive era. His smooth riding style and mechanical expertise led him to develop innovative racing chassis that influenced dirt-track racing throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Beyond the racetrack, Lawwill gained wider recognition through his appearance in the iconic film "On Any Sunday," which starred Steve McQueen and helped popularise motorcycle sport. Lawwill’s influence extended well beyond motorcycles into the burgeoning mountain bike industry, where he applied his engineering skills to suspension design. He patented a four-bar suspension system utilised by early Yeti and Schwinn bikes and created the Lawwill Leader, a pioneering leading-link suspension fork. Notably, he is credited with producing one of the world’s first production mountain bikes, the PRO CRUISER, launched in 1977. His contributions helped shape the technical evolution of mountain biking during its formative years, bridging the gap between two distinct but related sports. One of Lawwill’s most meaningful legacies lies in his commitment to adaptive sports. After a fellow racer, Chris Draayer, lost an arm in an accident, Lawwill developed “Mert’s Hands,” a prosthetic device that allowed riders with upper limb amputations to control motorcycles safely. This innovation not only enabled injured riders to return to the sport but also opened doors for adaptive athletes across motorcycling.
