Mathieu van der Poel's all new Canyon Endurace CFR is the fastest endurance bike the German brand has made
Summary By: eMotoX
Canyon has unveiled the latest iteration of its Endurace CFR endurance bike, marking one of the most significant updates since the model’s transition to disc brakes in 2016. Developed with input from Mathieu van der Poel and the Alpecin-Premier Tech team, the new Endurace CFR aims to blend speed, comfort, and versatility, particularly targeting the rigours of the Spring Classics and cobbled races like Paris-Roubaix. The bike made an immediate impact by securing a win at the E3 Saxo Classic, signalling its competitive potential in the pro peloton.
The design of the new Endurace CFR shares much of its geometry and hardware with Canyon’s Aeroad CFR race bike, although subtle modifications accommodate wider tyres and enhance comfort. While the Endurace is optimised for 30mm tyres, it can comfortably fit up to 35mm, with clearance for mud and debris, and even 40mm tyres in dry conditions, though this risks voiding the warranty. Despite not prioritising weight savings, the bike achieves a competitive mass of around 7.5kg in both Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and SRAM Red AXS builds, placing it on par with many aero race bikes.
Canyon has employed advanced carbon fibre layups, combining Toray T1100, T800, and YS80 pitch-based fibres to create a frame that balances stiffness and compliance. This construction enhances durability and ride quality over rough terrain, with the frame subjected to rigorous impact testing simulating cobblestone riding. To further improve rider comfort, the Endurace CFR features the innovative SP0093 VCLS Aero seatpost, which offers 25% more compliance than traditional rigid posts, helping to reduce fatigue on challenging surfaces.
The cockpit has also been redesigned with the new CP0048 Pace bar and stem assembly, offering extensive adjustability and aerodynamic benefits. Riders can fine-tune fit with 15 configurations and choose from three drop shapes to suit personal preferences. For those seeking a more aggressive setup, the CP0053 Race bar is available as an aftermarket option, providing a lower stack height, longer reach, and aerodynamic gains, reinforcing the Endurace CFR’s versatility across different riding styles and race demands.
Overall, the new Canyon Endurace CFR represents a significant step forward in endurance bike design, combining aerodynamic efficiency close to that of a pure race bike with the comfort and tyre clearance demanded by modern classics racing. With van der Poel’s involvement and early race success, the model is poised to challenge traditional boundaries between endurance and race bikes, potentially reshaping expectations for performance in long, rough road events.
