Itzulia Women 2026 route

The route for the fifth edition of Itzulia Women, scheduled for 15-17 May 2026, was unveiled in Zarautz, promising a demanding three-day race through the Basque Country. Covering a total distance of 372.4 kilometres, the Women's WorldTour event will feature 14 significant climbs, with the most challenging stage taking place on the final day in Donostia (San Sebastián). The race’s terrain, characterised by relentless elevation and steep ascents, is expected to encourage aggressive racing and tactical battles in the hills. Stage 1 begins and ends in Zarautz, marking the first time the town hosts a women’s stage. Covering 121.3 kilometres with six major climbs and 2,239 metres of elevation gain, the opening day offers little respite for riders. Climbs such as Kalbario, Alkarate, and Santa Ageda will test the peloton early on, while the stage concludes with a flat run-in after descending from the final climb, Garate. This opening stage is likely to set the tone for the general classification contest from the outset. The second stage, running from Abadiño to Amorebieta-Etxano over 131.7 kilometres, features the most climbing of the race with 2,474 metres of elevation. Early climbs like Natxitua will challenge riders, but the decisive moments are expected on the final two classified ascents, San Pelaio and Aretxabalgane, positioned within the last 50 kilometres. An additional unclassified hill near the finish adds an unpredictable element, potentially disrupting the race dynamics in the closing kilometres. The concluding stage takes place entirely within Donostia, covering 113.1 kilometres with three key climbs and 1,729 metres of climbing. The route mirrors previous editions, with the iconic Jaizkibel climb early in the stage, followed by Gurutze and the crucial Mendizorrotz ascent just 10 kilometres from the finish. Mendizorrotz’s proximity to the line makes it a likely launchpad for decisive attacks, ensuring the race outcome remains uncertain until the final moments. This finale promises to deliver a thrilling conclusion to the Basque Country’s premier women’s stage race.
