'It's unfortunate' – Jonas Vingegaard misses out on bonus seconds at Giro d'Italia
Summary By: eMotoX
Jonas Vingegaard’s campaign at the Giro d’Italia has progressed smoothly through the first four days, although the pre-race favourite missed out on crucial bonus seconds during stage 4. The Red Bull Kilometre intermediate sprint, offering time bonuses of 6, 4, and 2 seconds to the first three riders, saw Vingegaard make a well-supported attempt with a lead-out from teammate Victor Campenaerts. Despite launching a strong sprint, Vingegaard was overtaken in the final metres by Jan Christen and Giulio Pellizzari, leaving him without any bonus seconds on the day.
Visma-Lease a Bike’s sports director, Marc Reef, acknowledged the disappointment but emphasised the priority was keeping Vingegaard safe within the front group amid nervous conditions and a high pace early in the stage. The team’s strategy focused on positioning their leader well on the climb and descent to avoid any mishaps. While Pellizzari’s success at the sprint allowed him to move four seconds ahead of Vingegaard in the general classification, the Danish rider’s overall standing and status as favourite remain intact.
The time bonuses have so far played a minor psychological role, with Vingegaard yet to claim any, unlike rivals such as Egan Bernal and Thymen Arensman who have picked up seconds early on. However, these small gaps are expected to diminish once the race reaches its more challenging mountain stages, where Vingegaard has already demonstrated his climbing prowess with a strong attack on stage 2. Pellizzari, who was one of the few able to match Vingegaard on that stage, is emerging as a credible contender for the overall title.
Looking ahead, stage 5 offers another chance to contest the Red Bull Kilometre, situated 20 kilometres beyond the summit of the Montagna Grande di Viggiano climb. This could provide further opportunities for riders to gain valuable bonus seconds and influence the general classification. As the race unfolds, the battle between Vingegaard and his rivals promises to intensify, with the mountain stages likely to be decisive in shaping the outcome of this year’s Giro d’Italia.
