Nairo Quintana secured his first victory in four years by winning stage 2 of the 2026 Vuelta Asturias, a demanding mid-mountain route featuring four categorised climbs. The Colombian, riding for Movistar in his final professional season, crossed the line solo in Pola de Lena, marking the 52nd win of his career. This triumph came after a prolonged period without victories, his last being at the 2022 Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var, and adds to an illustrious palmarès that includes overall titles at the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España. The stage saw Quintana break away alongside 19-year-old neo-pro Adrià Pericas on the Alto de la Colladella climb, before eventually distancing Pericas on the final ascent of Alto do Carabanzo. Quintana praised the young rider’s strength and reflected on the experience he drew upon to maintain his lead. With two stages remaining, Quintana now leads the general classification by 31 seconds over Pericas, with teammate Diego Pescador in third place, 1 minute 21 seconds behind. Quintana’s victory was deeply emotional, as he dedicated the win to the memory of fellow Colombian cyclist Cristian Camilo Muñoz, who tragically passed away earlier that day due to complications from a knee infection sustained after a crash.
