Karolina Migoń, the defending champion of the Unbound Gravel 200 race, is fully recovered and preparing to defend her title in Emporia, Kansas. After a challenging weekend in Girona, Spain, where she crashed during the Traka 360 and subsequently withdrew, Migoń rebounded to finish fourth in the Traka 200 just a day later. Despite this respectable result, she expressed disappointment, emphasising that her ambitions remain high as she aims to claim a second consecutive victory at Unbound, a race she regards as a key target in her calendar. The crash in the Traka 360 was severe enough to cause a broken bike frame and physical discomfort, including chest pain from a handlebar impact. Migoń described the difficulties she faced managing mechanical issues without external support, such as repeatedly pumping a tyre and changing a wheel herself. Nonetheless, she confirmed that the injuries were not serious enough to hinder her training and that she is now in good condition ahead of the upcoming race. Her experience in long-distance gravel racing, especially in the US, has helped her embrace the unique challenges of courses featuring minimal maintenance and muddy conditions. Migoń’s approach to the Unbound Gravel 200 is shaped by her previous performances and the pressure of defending her title. Last year, she broke away early with teammates and rivals before powering ahead solo to victory, a strategy she is likely to repeat. She acknowledges the demanding atmosphere surrounding the event, from sponsor expectations to the intense week leading up to the race, but remains focused on securing the best possible result. Her affinity for long races and straight, open terrain gives her confidence, though she remains cautious about unpredictable weather and course conditions. Looking beyond Unbound, Migoń plans to take a well-earned break in Switzerland before returning to the US for further competition. She will debut at the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race, a high-altitude mountain bike event that will test her skills and endurance at over 3,000 metres above sea level. This new challenge is part of her broader strategy to maintain motivation and set fresh goals after achieving significant success in gravel racing.
