'I couldn't use any of my fingers' – Michael Matthews back on the bike after breaking both arms in training crash

Michael Matthews, the Australian rider for Jayco-AlUla, has made a significant step in his recovery after suffering severe injuries in a training crash earlier this year. Just six weeks after breaking both arms and undergoing multiple surgeries, Matthews has returned to cycling, initially on a home trainer and now back on the road despite still wearing casts. The 35-year-old described the ordeal as a challenging period, particularly as he was unable to use any of his fingers for some time, making communication difficult. He expressed gratitude for the support he received from his team and fans during his rehabilitation. The crash occurred shortly after Matthews completed an altitude training camp, just as he was preparing for the Spring Classics, a crucial phase of the racing calendar that he particularly enjoys. He sustained an open fracture on his left arm, a broken wrist and thumb on his right hand, and a sinus fracture to his face, requiring two separate surgeries in Italy and Belgium. Matthews shared X-ray images and photos documenting the extent of his injuries, highlighting the severity of the accident. Despite the setbacks, he has regained almost full movement in his fingers and has gradually resumed physical activity, starting with walking and gym work before returning to cycling. This injury marks the second major health challenge Matthews has faced in recent years. In 2025, he was sidelined for nearly four months after a pulmonary embolism forced him to miss the Tour de France, though he made a strong comeback by winning the Mixed Team Relay world title later that year. Matthews began the 2026 season promisingly, winning the Gran Premio Castellón and securing a podium in the Mallorca Challenge team time trial. However, the recent crash has disrupted his campaign, and while he is still expected to defend his Eschborn-Frankfurt title in May, that target may now be in doubt. Matthews remains optimistic about his future and is eager to return to competition, though his team has yet to confirm his race schedule beyond the Tour de France. He acknowledged the disappointment of missing the Classics but praised his team’s performance in his absence.
