Gravel racing is unpredictable again: A Life Time Grand Prix 2026 preview

The 2026 Life Time Grand Prix promises an exciting and unpredictable season in off-road cycling, kicking off with the Sea Otter Classic Gravel race on 16 April. The series spans six months and five US states, combining gravel and mountain bike events, with the finale set for Big Sugar Gravel in Bentonville, Arkansas. This year’s calendar remains consistent with 2025, featuring iconic races such as UNBOUND Gravel’s 200-mile challenge and the high-altitude Leadville Trail 100 MTB, ensuring a diverse and demanding competition for the 44 selected riders, including 19 international athletes. Significant rule changes have been introduced for 2026, most notably the implementation of a Pregnancy Policy, marking a progressive step for women’s sport within the Grand Prix. This policy allows pregnant athletes to withdraw without penalty and guarantees them a roster spot for the following season, provided they notify organisers in a timely manner and confirm their return. The policy was inspired by rider Sarah Sturm’s experience and reflects Life Time’s commitment to inclusivity and athlete welfare. Additionally, the U23 category returns, offering top young riders automatic entry into the 2027 series, while the Wild Card roster continues to provide opportunities for emerging talents to join mid-season. The competitive landscape is wide open, with last year’s surprise overall winner Cameron Jones returning as a formidable contender despite initially entering the series as a Wild Card. Established favourites include three-time champion Keegan Swenson and Matthew Beers, who have recently allied under the Specialized team banner. However, Swenson’s recovery from a broken pelvis and Beers’ recent Cape Epic victory add uncertainty to their form at the season opener. Other notable male riders include Simon Pellaud, Alexey Vermeulen, and newcomers such as European MTB Champion Andreas Seewald, promising a highly competitive men’s field. On the women’s side, Sofía Gómez Villafañe is the clear favourite, boasting multiple overall titles and recent victories, including a 2026 win at Mid South. She faces stiff competition from riders like 2025 UNBOUND winner Karolina Migoń and Gravel Earth Series champion Rosa Klöser. Last year’s runner-up Cecily Decker, alongside Cécile Lejeune and Paige Onweiler, also aims to challenge for the title.
