Giant Introduces All New Propel – More Aero and Lighter
Summary By: eMotoX
Giant has launched the all-new Propel range, a collection of aero road bikes designed to deliver enhanced aerodynamic performance and reduced weight. Central to the development is Giant’s “total speed system” philosophy, which optimises the interaction between rider, bike frame, cockpit, and wheels to minimise drag and rolling resistance. The flagship Propel Advanced SL model, used by the UCI WorldTour Team Jayco AlUla, features a frame that is 45 grams lighter than its predecessor, with a total weight saving of 355 grams when factoring in new components such as the integrated Contact SLR Aero handlebar/stem and CADEX Max 50 WheelSystem.
Extensive wind tunnel testing and real-world trials informed the design, including the use of a 3D-printed dynamic mannequin to simulate rider-bike aerodynamics at various yaw angles. This rigorous approach has resulted in a frameset with 3.4% greater torsional stiffness and a 2.4% increase in pedalling stiffness, yielding a 5.7% improvement in stiffness-to-weight ratio. Such gains translate into instantaneous power transfer and improved responsiveness, particularly during sprints, attacks, and climbs, where system efficiency is paramount.
Aerodynamics remain a key focus, with OverDrive Aero technology integrating a slim head tube and D-shaped fork steerer to reduce drag. Internal cable routing through the frame and cockpit further enhances airflow, while the new handlebars feature a narrower profile to reduce the rider’s frontal area. The Propel’s 50mm hookless carbon rims and purpose-built CADEX Aero tires optimise airflow across a range of wind conditions, maintaining speed without sacrificing stability or grip.
Comfort and sustained speed have also been prioritised through increased frame compliance. The Vector integrated seatpost offers 25% more vertical compliance, while the fork and cockpit absorb vibrations with a 12.8% improvement. Additional clearance for tyres up to 32mm allows for smoother rides on rough surfaces, reducing rider fatigue and enabling higher average speeds over long distances. This holistic approach to ride quality and efficiency underscores Giant’s commitment to producing race-ready bikes that perform across diverse conditions.
The new Propel range includes the Advanced SL, Advanced Pro, and Advanced models, each benefiting from these aerodynamic and compliance innovations. With input from professional riders and cutting-edge testing methods, Giant has refined the Propel into a bike that balances speed, control, and comfort, aiming to support riders in achieving their best performances. Further information on the full range is available on Giant’s official website.
