DT Swiss has refreshed its 1500 mountain bike wheel series, introducing carbon rims previously reserved for its top-tier 1200 range, combined with the reliable 240 hubs now featuring the brand’s DEG DF anti-kickback technology. This update delivers many premium features at a significantly lower price point, making high-performance wheels more accessible to riders. The 1500 series includes a variety of wheelsets designed for different mountain biking disciplines, from cross-country and all-mountain to enduro and eMTB, each built to balance strength, weight, and durability. The new 1500 wheels employ DT Swiss’s latest “pure carbon” rims, manufactured in Poland with enhanced fibre layup techniques for improved impact resistance and strength compared to aluminium alternatives. The wheels are built around 240 hubs upgraded with faster-engaging freehub bodies and adjustable anti-kickback devices, which help reduce pedal kickback on longer-travel bikes. Complementing these are the stronger Complite spokes, which use a fluted and butted design for increased durability without a significant weight penalty, resulting in robust yet lightweight wheelsets. Among the four families within the 1500 series, the XRC 1500 Spline is the lightest, aimed at cross-country riders prioritising efficiency and speed, and notably excludes the anti-kickback feature to save weight. The XMC 1500 Spline all-mountain wheels offer versatility with a mix of rim widths front and rear, higher spoke counts, and adjustable anti-kickback settings, making them suitable for aggressive trail and enduro riding. The EXC 1500 Classic wheels, designed for enduro and gravity disciplines, meet ASTM Category 5 standards, effectively replacing dedicated downhill wheels and accommodating modern axle standards for compatibility with the latest SRAM drivetrains. DT Swiss’s integration of the DEG DF anti-kickback mechanism across most 1500-series wheels represents a significant step forward, allowing riders to experience this technology without additional aftermarket modifications. This feature is especially beneficial for bikes with longer suspension travel, where pedal kickback can be more pronounced. By offering these advanced components in a mid-range wheelset, DT Swiss is broadening access to high-end performance and durability, potentially influencing the market for both aftermarket upgrades and OEM wheel options on complete bikes.
