Factor ONE, but make it gravel - A closer look at the wide-tyred Factor prototype at Unbound

Factor Bikes is set to debut a striking gravel prototype at the 2026 Unbound Gravel event, with several of its athletes slated to race and test the bike during the competition. Still in development and yet to be officially named, the prototype represents a significant evolution in Factor's approach to gravel cycling, incorporating feedback from top riders to enhance speed and performance. Engineers are optimistic that post-race analysis will refine the design further, bringing the bike closer to production readiness. The prototype draws heavily on the design language of Factor’s ONE road bike, particularly evident in its wide fork and generous tyre clearance. The front end features an aerodynamic head tube and fork shape that departs from traditional gravel bike designs, prioritising airflow where it matters most. The bike accommodates large 2.2-inch Continental Dubnitals tyres with ample mud clearance, while the rear end benefits from dropped chainstays and a lowered bottom bracket to maintain balanced geometry despite the larger tyres. Notably, the frame includes a removable section allowing for a 2x chainset setup, a feature that distinguishes it from competitors like Specialized’s Crux. Attention to detail extends to the bike’s cockpit and wheelset, with a new integrated handlebar offering a compact drop and some degree of flare, reminiscent of Black Inc’s road components. The prototype is equipped with deep-section Black Inc wheels, measuring 64mm in depth and appearing notably wide, which helps the tyres maintain a smooth, aerodynamic profile without the typical "lightbulb" shape seen on narrower rims. Additional practical features include the ability to mount an extra bottle cage on the downtube, enhancing hydration options for long-distance gravel racing. Factor’s prototype reflects a broader trend in gravel bike development, where aerodynamic efficiency and versatility are increasingly prioritised alongside traditional ruggedness and comfort.
