Faction and Andrew L’Esperance Have Teamed Up On An Electronic Chain Lubrication System for Gravel Racing

Faction Bike Studio has collaborated with Canadian gravel racer Andrew L’Esperance to develop an innovative electronic chain lubrication system designed specifically for the rigours of gravel racing. Gravel events like Unbound Gravel, which can stretch to 200 miles over challenging terrain and variable conditions, place immense stress on bike drivetrains, often leading to efficiency losses due to dirt and grime buildup. The new system aims to address this issue by providing a hands-free, on-demand lubrication solution that can be activated mid-ride, helping riders maintain optimal drivetrain performance without the need to stop or manually apply lubricant. The concept originated from L’Esperance’s own practical approach during races, where he previously attached a syringe of chain lube to his bike frame to manually drip lubricant on the chain while riding. Building on this DIY method, Faction Bike Studio and L’Esperance have engineered a fully integrated electronic system that includes a discreet lube reservoir housed within the seat tube, a handlebar-mounted remote control, and a custom guide and dripper positioned above the chainring. The system dispenses a measured amount of lubricant at the push of a button while pedalling, weighing in at just 100 grams, making it a lightweight and streamlined addition to race bikes. This new electronic chain lube system is not the first of its kind, with previous attempts like the Rohloff Lubmatic and Scottoiler Cycle S1 offering similar automated lubrication concepts. However, those earlier products struggled to gain traction commercially, likely due to a limited niche market. The Faction and L’Esperance collaboration, by contrast, appears to be the most refined and race-ready iteration, combining practicality with minimal weight and ease of use, potentially setting a new standard for on-the-fly drivetrain maintenance in gravel racing. The upcoming Unbound 200 race will serve as the first significant test for this system under real-world conditions. While a well-lubricated chain is just one factor among many in a successful gravel race, the ability to maintain drivetrain efficiency without stopping could provide a competitive edge.
