Applicants must hold a full driving licence for at least three years and possess the stamina to manage the physical demands of the job, including fending off eager fans who may get too close to the open-top vehicle. Michel-Édouard Leclerc, president of E.Leclerc’s Strategic Committee, emphasised the challenge involved in driving the specially designed electric car, highlighting the need for experience and a steady hand. The recruitment period covers both the men’s race in July and the women’s race in August, reflecting the growing prominence of the women’s Tour.
The Tour de France caravan has a long history dating back to 1930, when it was introduced by race founder Henri Desgrange as a means to finance cycling equipment. Over the decades, it has evolved into a major spectacle in its own right, with nearly half of the race’s fans attending primarily to see the parade of promotional vehicles and collect free merchandise. The cauliflower car will be one of around 50 vehicles forming this colourful procession, which adds a festive atmosphere to the race and promotes French products.
Leclerc stressed that the caravan’s purpose goes beyond advertising; it is about creating joy and celebration among the crowds lining the route. The supermarket’s vegetable-themed vehicles have become a beloved feature of the Tour, combining humour and marketing in a way that enhances the overall experience. With many applicants already vying for the chance to become the next cauliflower driver, the selection process is underway, offering a unique opportunity to be part of one of sport’s most iconic events.
