ENVE Built the New XC28 Wheels for Cross-Country, but They’re Also E-Bike Approved
Summary By: eMotoX
ENVE has introduced the new XC28 wheelset, designed primarily for cross-country (XC) riding but also approved for use with certain e-bikes. Unlike many competitors who have trended towards wider rims to meet the demands of modern XC tracks, ENVE has retained a 28mm inner width, focusing instead on enhancing durability and strength. Drawing on experience from their M Series and AM30 wheels, the XC28 aims to balance performance, compliance, and affordability for both XC and trail riders.
The XC28 wheels feature a 21mm rim depth and a robust 3.8mm sidewall thickness, incorporating ENVE’s patent-pending Wide Hookless Bead technology. This design innovation increases the bead’s width, which helps dissipate impact energy more effectively and reportedly reduces pinch flats by over 50%. Strength is further improved by using 28 spokes front and rear, with moulded spoke and valve holes that preserve carbon fibre continuity, enhancing durability while reducing weight.
The wheels are paired with ENVE’s Innerdrive hubs, equipped with a sturdy 42mm ratchet system and standard 80 points of engagement (POE), with an option to upgrade to 100 POE. The complete wheelset weighs 1,516 grams and is capable of handling up to 75Nm of torque, making it suitable for lightweight e-mountain bikes and mid-power e-bikes, though it may not withstand the higher torque outputs of more powerful drive units like the Avinox. The XC28 is compatible with 29-inch tyres ranging from 2.25 to 2.4 inches, optimised for 2.4-inch tyres, and offers Boost and Superboost hub spacing options.
Priced at $1,400, the XC28 represents ENVE’s commitment to delivering a durable, lightweight wheelset that meets the evolving needs of XC riders without following the wider rim trend. Its approval for use with certain e-bikes also reflects the growing crossover between traditional mountain biking and electric assist technology, providing a versatile option for riders seeking performance and reliability across different riding styles.
