eMTBs of Sea Otter 2026: Some May Look Familiar, Others Won’t

Summary By: eMotoX
The Sea Otter Classic 2026 showcased a diverse array of electric mountain bikes (eMTBs), highlighting both familiar models with updated components and entirely new offerings. A notable trend was the increasing adoption of the Avinox motor, with brands like Commencal and Ari unveiling eMTBs equipped with this drive unit. Commencal’s Meta Power SX received a significant update, featuring the Avinox MS2 motor delivering 150Nm of torque alongside an 800Wh battery, coupled with frame geometry tweaks to enhance performance. Ari teased the Wire Peak, an alloy-framed eMTB offering adjustable geometry, multiple wheel options, and competitive pricing starting below $5,000, signalling a strong value proposition in the mid-range market. Kona and Norco also introduced revamped models that blend innovation with established reputations. Kona’s Remote 160 made its debut as the brand’s first carbon-framed e-bike, incorporating a Bosch SX drive unit and a factory-fitted range extender, a first for Kona’s e-bike range. Norco’s Sight VLT Bosch A brought a fresh aluminium frame design paired with the powerful Bosch PX motor, boasting 700W output and 90Nm torque, while maintaining affordability with prices starting at $4,799. These launches reflect a broader industry push towards combining lightweight materials, enhanced powertrains, and practical features like range extenders to meet the demands of serious riders. The event also highlighted lesser-known and emerging brands making their mark in the eMTB scene. German brand Bulls presented a new model featuring a Bosch CX motor, integrated lighting, and a distinctive one-piece carbon cockpit, with pricing aimed at the mid-market segment. HPC, meanwhile, blurred the lines between e-bike and electric moto with its Trail Blazer enduro bike powered by a high-torque Bafang motor and large in-house batteries up to 1,050Wh. These introductions underscore Sea Otter’s role as a platform for innovation and discovery, offering riders a glimpse of cutting-edge technology and design from both established and niche manufacturers. Shimano-powered eMTBs were well represented, with models like the Jamis Defcon and Canyon’s Torque ON and Spectral ON making appearances. Despite past battery issues leading to recalls, Canyon confirmed that shipments of their electrified models have resumed, signalling a return to form. Bosch-equipped bikes also drew attention, with eye-catching designs such as the Revel ReRun and Polygon Collosus TE showcasing the versatility and appeal of Bosch’s drive units across different price points and styles. Cannondale’s Bosch CX-equipped Moterras continued to impress with their “long, low, and slack” geometry, offering a planted ride experience despite occasional pedal strikes. A particularly intriguing development came from UK-based Intradrive, which introduced the GD8, a hybrid gearbox and motor unit designed to integrate with Shimano EP8 motors. This 700W, 8-speed electronic shifting system promises rapid gear changes and compatibility with both belt and chain drives, representing
