Chris Froome to cycle across Mediterranean for charity, with Jakob Fuglsang and Filippo Pozzato
Summary By: eMotoX
Chris Froome is set to join 31 other athletes in a unique charity event crossing the Mediterranean Sea on specially designed water bikes. The challenge, named Together Crossing for the Pelagos, will take place on 19 June and involves cycling 225 kilometres from Viareggio in Italy to Monaco. Alongside Froome, former WorldTour professionals Jakob Fuglsang and Filippo Pozzato will participate, with the event aiming to raise funds for the Princess Charlène of Monaco Foundation and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
The crossing route passes through the Pelagos Sanctuary, a protected marine area spanning the French Riviera, Monaco, and the Ligurian coast. The initiative not only supports ocean conservation but also promotes water safety and drowning prevention through educational programmes. The event is backed by Scicon Sports, a sunglass brand that emphasises its longstanding commitment to water safety and environmental responsibility, highlighting the synergy between sport and ecological awareness.
Princess Charlène of Monaco has expressed her hopes that the event will inspire greater commitment to protecting the Mediterranean and demonstrate how athletic endeavour can align with environmental stewardship. For Froome, this marks a notable chapter as he remains without a professional cycling team and has not raced since August last year. His recent activities include a role as chief innovation officer at the AI training platform Vekta and participation in a Gran Fondo event in Panama, but he has yet to announce his future plans in competitive cycling.
Scicon Sports’ operational manager Claudio Fantin highlighted the event’s significance for the brand, describing it as a return to their roots and an important part of their identity. The company is proud to support the event’s fundraising goals, particularly its focus on water safety education. This Mediterranean crossing represents a convergence of elite sport, environmental advocacy, and charitable fundraising, with high-profile athletes lending their profiles to raise awareness and funds for vital causes.
