Chris Froome returns to action in pedal boat charity race across the Mediterranean Sea

Chris Froome is making a return to competitive activity, although not on his traditional road bike. The four-time Tour de France champion will participate in a unique endurance event, racing a pedal-powered boat across the Mediterranean Sea. The challenge, known as The Crossing, involves a 225-kilometre route from Viareggio, Italy, to Monaco, passing through the Pelagos Sanctuary, a protected marine area. Organised by Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, the event aims to raise funds for marine conservation and water safety initiatives. The Crossing will see 32 athletes divided into eight teams of four, including former professional cyclists Filippo Pozzato and Jakob Fuglsang, competing in this novel format. Scheduled for 19 June, the race will test the participants’ endurance and teamwork over several hours on the water. The event is sponsored by Scicon Sports, an eyewear brand, highlighting the growing interest in alternative and environmentally conscious sporting challenges. Froome’s involvement marks a notable departure from his usual cycling pursuits, coming after a difficult period following a serious training crash last September that threatened his career. Since then, he has not competed in professional road racing and his contract with the NSN team has expired. While he has engaged in other activities, such as working with an AI training platform and participating in Gran Fondo events, his future in professional cycling remains uncertain. Despite speculation, Froome has not officially announced retirement and has remained tight-lipped about any potential comeback. His last public comments on the matter came in December during the Vuelta a España route presentation, where he stated he was not ready to discuss his plans. The Crossing offers a glimpse of Froome’s continued competitive spirit, albeit in a very different arena, and raises questions about what direction his sporting career might take next.
