AusCycling says special general meeting vote to remove Craig Bingham as Director and Chair did not pass
Summary By: eMotoX
A recent special general meeting of AusCycling saw a motion to remove Craig Bingham from his roles as Director and Chair fail to pass. The vote, conducted online and involving 243 member clubs, resulted in just under 30% supporting the motion, while over 70% opposed it. This outcome means Bingham will remain in his leadership positions until the end of his current term at the organisation’s upcoming annual general meeting.
The special general meeting was convened following a formal request by member clubs under the provisions of the Australian Corporations Act, with four motions initially proposed. However, AusCycling deemed only the motion regarding Bingham’s removal legally valid, a decision contested by representatives of the clubs that initiated the meeting. The meeting involved approximately 35% of AusCycling’s membership, reflecting the voting rights allocated to clubs based on their size, with larger clubs holding more votes.
Looking ahead, AusCycling’s annual general meeting on 30 May will see elections for two director positions, including Bingham’s. Both he and fellow director Lee Brentzell are eligible to seek re-election for a further three-year term. Nominations for these positions close on 1 May, setting the stage for a potentially significant leadership contest within Australia’s national cycling body.
AusCycling was established over five years ago through the amalgamation of 19 separate cycling organisations, uniting disciplines such as road, BMX, and mountain biking under one umbrella. The organisation currently represents around 470 affiliated clubs, with voting rights strictly reserved for these clubs rather than individual members. This structure underscores the importance of club representation in governance decisions within the sport’s national administration.
