AMSTEL GOLD RACE: Classic Beer History

The Amstel Gold Race, inaugurated in 1966, stands as one of cycling’s youngest Classics, conceived by Herman Krott, who sought to establish a Dutch race rivaling the prestige of the Tour of Flanders and Milano-Sanremo. Initially planned to run from Amsterdam to Maastricht, the route was adjusted to start in Breda and finish in Meerssen, with the first edition held on Queen’s Day. Jean Stablinski, a former World Champion and Vuelta a España winner, claimed victory in the inaugural race, setting a high standard for future editions. Over the decades, the Amstel Gold Race has attracted a roll call of cycling legends, including Eddy Merckx, Jan Raas, Philippe Gilbert, and recent stars like Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, and Tadej Pogačar. The Netherlands leads the winners’ tally with eighteen victories, followed by Belgium and Italy. Notably, Dutch riders such as Jan Raas and Gerrie Knetemann have left a significant mark, while the race continues to produce thrilling finishes, exemplified by Pogačar’s commanding solo win in 2023 and Tom Pidcock’s narrow sprint victory in 2024. Herman Krott’s influence remains central to the race’s identity, with his legacy honoured through the Herman Krott Trophy, awarded to the most combative rider. Krott passed away in 2010, and since 1996 Leo van Vliet has served as race director, overseeing nearly three decades of the event. The organisation of the race transitioned to Flanders Classics in 2025, marking a new chapter while retaining Van Vliet’s leadership until his final edition in 2026. Recent editions have showcased intense competition among the sport’s elite. In 2023, Pogačar’s decisive attack on the Keutenberg secured a solo victory, while the following year saw Pidcock triumph in a sprint finish after overcoming previous near misses. The 2025 race featured a dramatic finale with Mattias Skjelmose out-sprinting both Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel, underscoring the race’s reputation for unpredictability and high drama. As the Amstel Gold Race continues to evolve, it remains a highlight on the cycling calendar, blending rich history with contemporary excitement.
