All-time cycling great Eddy Merckx has sixth hip operation in six months

Eddy Merckx, widely regarded as one of cycling’s all-time greats, has undergone his sixth hip operation in just six months due to complications following a fall while riding in late 2024. The 80-year-old Belgian legend has faced persistent issues with his hip prosthesis, which has required multiple surgeries and replacements. The latest procedure, the first since September, was necessary after the prosthetic hip failed to properly attach to the bone and an infection developed, necessitating a thorough cleaning and partial replacement of the implant. The recent surgery, known medically as a debridement, involved removing infected tissue and changing parts of the prosthetic limb. Recovery is expected to take several weeks, with Merckx currently out of intensive care and resting in a standard hospital room. His son Axel reported that the operation went well under the circumstances, but emphasised that a full recovery will take time and the effectiveness of the treatment remains to be seen. Despite his ongoing health challenges and frequent hospital visits, Merckx remains deeply engaged with the cycling world. He recently commented on Tadej Pogačar’s victory at the Tour of Flanders, expressing admiration for the young rider’s potential by saying simply that Pogačar “can win everything.” This shows Merckx’s enduring passion for the sport even as he battles serious medical setbacks.
