After 100 hours of aerodynamic and thermal testing, the Specialized Evade 4 isn’t any faster - but it is cooler

Summary By: eMotoX
Specialized has unveiled the fourth-generation Evade helmet, focusing primarily on improving ventilation without sacrificing aerodynamic performance. Despite extensive testing—100 hours dedicated to aerodynamic and thermal assessments—the new Evade 4 does not deliver any measurable speed gains compared to its predecessors. Instead, the key achievement lies in reducing heat build-up by 2.4 per cent, making it a cooler and more comfortable option for riders, particularly in hotter conditions. The design changes reflect this shift in priorities, with the Evade 4 featuring seven vents, up from five in the previous model, and new slotted exhausts on either side of the rear shell. The internal shape has been refined to accommodate a wider range of head shapes, complemented by a new retention cradle and integrated padding using COOLMAX® fabric within the MIPS Airnode Pro system. Additionally, the helmet’s tail has been shortened, drawing inspiration from Specialized’s TT5 time trial helmet, to maintain aerodynamic efficiency during aggressive riding positions. Specialized’s spokesperson highlighted that the development focus was driven by rising global temperatures and the need for a helmet that riders would prefer to wear on hot days, rather than opting for alternatives like the Prevail 3. While the Evade 4 is slightly heavier than its predecessor—290g compared to 272g—it maintains its aerodynamic credentials without penalty. The helmet is priced at £279 and is available in six colours, including new options such as Root Beer and Multi Aurora. The broader context suggests that aerodynamic gains in helmet design may be reaching a plateau, especially with regulatory changes like the UCI’s ban on visors in mass-start races limiting innovation avenues. Specialized’s approach with the Evade 4 indicates a strategic pivot towards comfort and thermal management rather than chasing marginal speed improvements. A full review of the Evade 4 is forthcoming, but for now, riders can find discounted deals on the Evade 3 as the new model enters the market.
