'A whole lot of upside and potential' - Armed Forces Cycling Classic partners with ASO for international development of pro races, amateur events in US capitol

Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), renowned for organising prestigious cycling events such as the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes, has entered a multi-year partnership with Arlington Sports to enhance the international profile of the Amazon Armed Forces Cycling Classic (AFCC). This strategic alliance aims to expand both the professional races and amateur events held annually in the Washington D.C. area. The AFCC, which has been a staple of the region’s cycling calendar for nearly three decades, includes the Capitol Cup and Clarendon Cup pro races, alongside mass participation rides, and will continue with its established format in 2025. Arlington Sports, led by founder Rob Laybourn, has cultivated the AFCC into a significant cycling event with strong local support, sponsorship, and community engagement. Laybourn expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting the potential for growth and the shared mission of nurturing the sport. He will remain as race director for the upcoming season, working alongside A.S.O. to elevate the event’s stature and reach. The partnership reflects a mutual commitment to maintaining the event’s grassroots appeal while exploring new opportunities, including potential broadcast coverage. A.S.O. views the Washington D.C. region as a critical market for cycling’s expansion in the United States, especially with the city’s proximity to the upcoming Olympic Games and its vibrant cycling culture. The organisation emphasised the event’s political backing and the presence of major corporate sponsors, which provide a solid foundation for future development. Both parties aim to foster inclusivity and encourage broader public participation in cycling, using the AFCC as a platform to promote the sport’s growth at all levels. The 2025 AFCC will maintain its current race venues and prize structure, with professional races sanctioned by USA Cycling and equal prize money for men’s and women’s categories. The Challenge Ride continues to offer a family-friendly, car-free experience on a closed 12-mile course. This collaboration marks a significant step for American cycling, signalling A.S.O.’s commitment to supporting and expanding the sport across the US market while preserving the event’s community roots and competitive integrity.
