3T Ultra² Italia Gravel Bike, Made of Fusion Carbon in Italy at Little Extra Cost: Review

Summary By: eMotoX
3T has introduced the Ultra² Italia, the latest evolution of its versatile gravel bike range, now fully manufactured in Italy using a novel Fusion Carbon process. This new model builds on the original Ultra’s reputation as a comfortable, lightweight, and aerodynamic gravel bike, enhancing its capabilities with improved geometry, greater tyre clearance, suspension fork options, and additional bikepacking-friendly features such as internal cable routing and a built-in glovebox. The Italia designation signifies a significant shift, with the frame produced entirely at 3T’s Bergamo headquarters, marking a milestone in the brand’s commitment to European manufacturing. The Fusion Carbon manufacturing technique represents a major advancement over 3T’s previous Jazz Carbon process. While the original method involved labour-intensive hand assembly of dry carbon fibres into complex tube shapes, Fusion Carbon automates much of this work by separately pre-moulding connecting joints and using a proprietary adhesive to hold fibres in place before resin infusion. Although this results in slightly heavier but stronger lugs due to a more limited fibre orientation, the process greatly increases production efficiency, allowing 3T to produce three to four times as many frames daily without compromising quality. This manufacturing innovation has enabled 3T to offer the Ultra² Italia at a significantly reduced price compared to other Italian-made models, cutting the premium of European production by a third. While the new frame is about 25% more expensive than the original Asian-made Ultra, it includes upgraded components such as an integrated aero gravel handlebar and carbon stem, making it a compelling option for riders seeking a high-quality, adventure-ready gravel bike made closer to home. The cost reduction also reflects 3T’s broader strategy to bring more frame production back to Europe amid global supply chain challenges. Looking ahead, 3T plans to refine the Fusion Carbon process further by developing in-house automated fibre alignment technology to optimise frame weight and performance. Although ultralight frames are not yet achievable with this method, the company anticipates that these advancements will enhance load-specific strength while maintaining affordability. The Ultra² Italia thus represents both a practical and symbolic step in 3T’s ongoing effort to innovate in carbon frame manufacturing and strengthen its European production footprint.
