'The situation is becoming a bit untenable' – Jan-Willem van Schip's team manager says fines for repeated disqualifications are 'unsustainable'

These infractions have not only overshadowed his racing results but have also resulted in substantial financial penalties for the Continental squad. Berghmans highlighted the financial burden imposed by Van Schip’s fines, which typically amount to around 1,000 Swiss Francs per incident—an unsustainable cost for a smaller team operating on a limited budget. He emphasised the difficulty in managing a rider who consistently tests the boundaries of the rules, stating that the team’s energy and resources are disproportionately consumed by dealing with repeated jury hearings and technical checks. The manager urged Van Schip to conform to the regulations and race like any other competitor to avoid further penalties and distractions. The scrutiny from race officials has intensified due to Van Schip’s history of rule-breaking, with commissaires closely monitoring his equipment and riding style. Berghmans noted that even minor technical issues lead to heightened inspections and bike changes for Van Schip, unlike other riders who rarely attract such attention. This increased oversight has made race days more stressful for the team, detracting from their overall focus and performance. Following his latest disqualification, Van Schip was seen visibly distressed by the roadside, leading to some social media speculation about police intervention. However, Berghmans clarified that the police simply asked Van Schip to stop racing and that no force was used.
