Electricity Savings for Residents with Disabilities Thanks to Community Solar Power

Trinity Services, a nonprofit supporting over 6,800 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health needs, has partnered with clean energy advisor Common Energy to implement five community solar projects in the Chicago area. This collaboration aims to reduce energy costs for Trinity’s residential units and community facilities by subscribing them to local solar farms. The initiative will provide long-term savings, with Trinity’s residential locations receiving 20% of the solar credit value for two decades, offering significant financial relief that can be redirected to support the organisation’s mission. The five community solar projects have a combined capacity of 16 megawatts and are expected to generate around 20.7 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually. This output will offset fossil fuel-generated power and reduce carbon emissions by more than 563 million pounds over the programme’s lifetime. By participating in these projects within the ComEd service area, Trinity Services not only secures durable energy savings but also contributes to the expansion of local renewable energy infrastructure. Bob Taylor, CFO of Trinity Services, emphasised the importance of the energy savings, highlighting how they enable the organisation to better support its clients while promoting environmental responsibility. Richard Keiser, CEO of Common Energy, noted the broader impact of the partnership, underlining how community solar savings can enhance services for people with disabilities across Illinois. Both parties acknowledged the support of Commonwealth Edison, Energy Solutions, and the Illinois Power Agency in facilitating the Illinois Shines Program, which underpins these community solar initiatives. The partnership exemplifies how community solar programmes can serve as a practical tool for nonprofits to reduce operational costs while advancing sustainability goals.
