Largest Solar Cell Factory In USA Starts Production in Georgia

Qcells has commenced production of solar cells at its new facility in Cartersville, Georgia, marking a significant milestone in the US solar manufacturing industry. The factory, which already produces solar modules, is set to become the first vertically integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) production site in the country, manufacturing ingots, wafers, cells, and modules all under one roof. Once fully operational by the third quarter of 2026, the plant will add 3.3 gigawatts (GW) of capacity for ingots, wafers, and cells, alongside 3.5 GW of module capacity, contributing to a total US output of 8.6 GW. This integrated approach is unique in the United States and offers considerable advantages, including eligibility for multiple tax credits under the Biden administration’s clean energy incentives. Qcells emphasises that producing all major components domestically allows customers to benefit from a 10% domestic content bonus under the Investment Tax Credit, enhancing supply certainty and pricing stability. The factory’s scale and comprehensive production capabilities position it to meet the growing demand for fully domestic solar equipment, reinforcing the competitiveness of Qcells’ products in the US market. The Cartersville facility is already operating at full module production capacity, manufacturing approximately 16,700 solar PV modules daily. With the addition of solar cell production expected to reach full capacity by autumn, it will become the largest solar cell, ingot, and wafer production site in US history. Combined with Qcells’ expanded Dalton factory, which increased module capacity to 5.1 GW in late 2023, the company’s Georgia operations will produce around 47,000 panels daily, enough to power roughly 1.3 million American homes annually. Beyond its industrial significance, the investment in Cartersville is also creating substantial employment opportunities in Northwest Georgia. Together with the Dalton facility, Qcells anticipates nearly 4,000 direct jobs across Bartow and Whitfield Counties, supporting the local economy with skilled manufacturing roles. This development underscores the ongoing vitality of the US solar power sector and highlights Qcells’ role in advancing domestic clean energy production.
