Mexico Reaches 5 Gigawatts of Distributed Solar Power

Summary By: eMotoX
Mexico has achieved a significant milestone in renewable energy by surpassing 5 gigawatts (GW) of distributed solar power capacity across the country. According to the National Energy Commission (CNE), there are now over 600,000 small-scale solar installations, collectively generating more than 5,164 MW of power by the end of 2025. These figures highlight the rapid expansion of solar energy at a distributed level, with nearly all systems under 0.7 MW being solar-based. A major factor behind this growth has been the implementation of net metering policies, which incentivise rooftop solar owners by allowing them to sell excess electricity back to the grid. Nearly 594,000 applications and over 5,100 MW of installed capacity are connected to net metering schemes. Smaller systems, typically up to 50 kW, make up the vast majority of applications and contribute significantly to the total net-metered capacity, while larger installations between 250 kW and 500 kW, though fewer in number, also add a substantial share of power. The western state of Jalisco stands out as a leader in Mexico’s distributed solar market, boasting close to 100,000 installations and nearly 750 MW of installed capacity by the end of last year. This regional success underscores the growing appeal and viability of solar power across different parts of the country. The overall investment in these projects is estimated to exceed $13 billion, reflecting strong financial commitment to renewable energy infrastructure. Looking ahead, Mexico’s achievement in distributed solar power signals a promising trajectory for the country’s clean energy transition. Continued support for net metering and related policies will be crucial in maintaining this momentum, potentially encouraging further decentralisation of power generation. As solar technology becomes increasingly accessible, Mexico is well-positioned to expand its renewable energy portfolio and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
