Under Pressure, Hyundai Steel to Significantly Reduce Emissions, Switch from Gas to Electric Heaters at Proposed Louisiana Plant

Hyundai Steel has announced significant revisions to its air permit application for its proposed steel plant in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, signalling a major shift towards cleaner operations. The company plans to replace nine gas-fired industrial heaters with electric alternatives and introduce additional pollution control technologies. These measures are expected to substantially reduce the plant’s emissions, addressing concerns raised by local communities and environmental groups about the potential environmental impact of the facility in the heavily industrialised region known as Cancer Alley. The switch from gas to electric heating alone is projected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 22,000 tons annually, equivalent to removing approximately 5,000 petrol-powered cars from the road for a year. Furthermore, Hyundai will install two additional selective catalytic reduction systems to curb nitrogen oxide emissions by 500 tons per year, while particulate matter pollution is expected to be halved, representing a significant improvement for local air quality and public health. These changes come after sustained pressure from advocacy groups such as the Sierra Club, which has highlighted the need for cleaner technology and stricter pollution controls. Environmental campaigners have welcomed Hyundai’s updated plans but maintain that more must be done to fully mitigate the plant’s impact. Sierra Club Senior Attorney Andrea Issod acknowledged the progress made but emphasised that the company’s permit application still contains shortcomings that need to be addressed before construction can proceed. She urged Hyundai to consider full electrification of the facility and the use of green hydrogen as a fuel source to further reduce emissions and protect the health of workers and nearby residents. The revisions follow detailed critiques from the Sierra Club, which argued that Hyundai’s original proposal failed to comply with federal and state environmental regulations by neglecting cleaner alternatives. The group also raised concerns about the company’s handling of toxic dust during construction and transportation activities. Community organisations, including Good Neighbors Louisiana, have actively engaged with Hyundai, presenting demands and filing additional comments with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality to ensure the project aligns with environmental and public health standards. Hyundai Steel’s updated approach represents a notable step towards reducing the environmental footprint of a major industrial development in a region long plagued by pollution. However, ongoing scrutiny from environmental advocates and regulators suggests that the company will need to continue enhancing its sustainability measures to secure approval and maintain community support.
