BMW iX3 Starting $5,000 Cheaper Than Comparable BMW X3

Summary By: eMotoX
BMW has introduced the 2027 iX3, an electric SUV positioned to challenge its petrol-powered counterpart, the X3, by entering the US market at a significantly lower starting price. The iX3 will be priced at $61,500, which is $5,000 cheaper than a comparable petrol X3 model, although it remains around $10,000 above the base X3. This pricing strategy, combined with the iX3’s enhanced range and advanced technology, suggests BMW is aiming to boost its electric vehicle (EV) sales and narrow the gap with its internal combustion engine (ICE) offerings. The iX3 boasts a range of 434 miles, a notable improvement over the iX’s 283 to 312 miles, addressing a key concern for many EV buyers who prioritise longer driving distances. It features BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which includes more energy-dense batteries and an 800V architecture that supports ultra-fast charging at up to 400 kW, enabling drivers to add approximately 185 miles of range in just 10 minutes. These technical advancements reduce energy losses and weight while cutting manufacturing costs, positioning the iX3 as a more efficient and practical electric SUV. BMW has equipped the iX3 with a comprehensive suite of standard features, including the Panoramic iDrive system, multifunction steering wheel, and various interior design options. Buyers can also choose from a range of optional packages such as the Comfort Package, Driving Assistance Professional Package, and several M Sport variants, which add luxury, safety, and performance enhancements. Additional standalone options include premium leather upholstery, heated seats, and advanced audio systems, allowing customers to tailor the vehicle to their preferences. Despite the promising specifications and competitive pricing, the iX3 faces challenges in gaining a strong foothold in the US market. BMW’s electric sales currently lag behind competitors like Cadillac, which achieved a 28.3% electric sales share in 2025 compared to BMW’s 10.9%. Factors such as dealer availability, supply constraints, and consumer awareness may initially limit the iX3’s impact. However, the launch could mark a step towards BMW increasing its electric market share and paving the way for future models from its Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform.
