NIO Sales Soar 62% in May

Summary By: eMotoX
NIO reported a remarkable surge in sales for May 2026, delivering 37,705 vehicles, which marks a 62.3% increase compared to the same month last year. This growth also represents a 28.4% rise from April, contributing to a strong start to the year with total sales reaching 150,526 units in the first five months—a year-on-year increase of nearly 69%. The sales were distributed among three brands: NIO itself led with over 20,000 units, followed by ONVO and FIREFLY with 12,029 and 5,663 sales respectively. The company’s positive momentum was bolstered by the launch of new models that are expected to further enhance its market position. On 15 May, NIO introduced the ONVO L80, a smart flagship five-seat SUV designed to meet diverse user needs through innovative space utilisation, advanced technologies, and a comprehensive charging and battery swapping infrastructure. The L80 has already garnered favourable user feedback, signalling its potential to accelerate battery electric vehicle (BEV) adoption in the large SUV segment. In addition to the L80, NIO maintained its dominance in the premium SUV market with the All-New ES8, which has topped sales charts for vehicles priced above RMB 400,000 across all energy types for five consecutive months. The company also unveiled the ES9 executive SUV on 27 May, with deliveries starting the following day. The ES9 represents the culmination of over a decade of innovation, featuring cutting-edge smart technology, executive-level comfort, and a high-voltage architecture designed to set new standards in the executive electric SUV category. NIO’s strong sales performance and strategic product launches position it well against competitors such as XPENG, which it has recently begun to outpace after trailing for some time. With a robust pipeline of new models and expanding infrastructure, NIO is poised to sustain and potentially accelerate its growth trajectory throughout the remainder of 2026, signalling an increasingly competitive landscape in China’s premium electric vehicle market.
