MG launches new small electric SUV, MG4X at $A20,500

Summary By: eMotoX
MG has officially launched its new small electric SUV, the MG 4X, in the Chinese market, with prices starting at approximately AUD 20,500. The vehicle features the company’s innovative “liquid-solid state battery” technology and is positioned as a family-friendly electric option with enhanced ride height and interior space. MG’s parent company promoted the launch on its Weibo page, highlighting the model’s appeal for quality travel and signalling its potential for international release in the near future. The MG 4X shares design elements with the MG4 Urban hatch and the MG S5 electric SUV, both of which are already available in Australia. Measuring 4.5 metres in length, the 4X offers a spacious interior that includes a large central touchscreen complemented by physical buttons for ease of use, as well as a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The cabin design adopts a minimalist approach, reducing the number of physical controls compared to earlier MG electric vehicles, which enhances user experience on the road. Under the bonnet, the 4X is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor delivering either 125 kW or 150 kW depending on the trim, differing from the front-wheel-drive setup of the MG4 Urban hatch. The new “liquid-solid state battery” comes in a 54 kWh variant, offering an estimated range of up to 510 km on the CLTC cycle, roughly equivalent to 400 km under the WLTP standard. A larger 64 kWh battery option is also available, extending the range by approximately 100 km. The MG 4X is expected to be exported beyond China by late 2026, with speculation that it could be competitively priced under AUD 35,000 in Australia. If this price point is achieved, the SUV could become a strong contender in the growing electric vehicle market, rivaling models such as the BYD Atto 2 and upcoming offerings from GWM and Leapmotor. The launch reflects MG’s ongoing commitment to expanding its electric vehicle portfolio and appealing to families seeking affordable, practical EVs.
