Gravel Legend Yuri Hauswald is Raising Money for Charity with Unique Unbound Challenge

Yuri Hauswald, a celebrated figure in gravel racing, is returning from retirement to participate in his seventh Unbound 200 event with a distinctive charitable mission. Known for his 2015 victory at the Unbound 200 and a strong record in ultra-distance gravel races, Hauswald will start at the very back of the field on 30 May and attempt to overtake as many riders as possible. Each competitor he passes will trigger matched donations, turning his race into a fundraising effort aimed at benefiting the local community of Emporia, Kansas. The fundraising initiative, named Chase the Race, is a collaboration between Hauswald and GU Energy’s charitable branch, GU Gives. The campaign seeks to raise $50,000 to help build a bike skills park and a protected mixed-use path in Emporia, enhancing safe access and encouraging youth participation in cycling and outdoor activities. The Life Time Foundation is also backing the project, contributing resources to support children's health programmes, including nutrition and movement initiatives, which align with the broader goals of the fundraiser. Hauswald’s commitment to youth and community development is well established, reflecting his background as a former educator and advocate for cycling as a tool for positive social impact. GU Gives has contributed an initial $2,000 to the cause, and Hauswald himself has pledged $1,000, demonstrating his personal investment in the project. As of late May, the campaign had already raised nearly half of its target, with further donations expected based on Hauswald’s performance during the race. Supporters can contribute through the Chase the Race platform by pledging donations per rider passed or making one-off donations. Hauswald’s challenge to start from last place and climb through a field of over 1,500 athletes adds a compelling competitive edge to the fundraising effort. The outcome of this unique race-day initiative will not only reflect Hauswald’s athletic prowess but also the community’s collective support for expanding cycling opportunities and infrastructure in Emporia.
