Geely’s best selling EX2 to get a battery upgrade in China, ahead of local launch
Summary By: eMotoX
Geely is set to upgrade its best-selling electric hatchback, the EX2, in its home market of China with a larger battery pack ahead of its anticipated Australian launch in the latter half of 2026. The new model will feature a 47 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which is expected to deliver up to 460 km of range under China’s CLTC cycle. This represents a notable improvement over the current 40.16 kWh battery variant sold in Thailand, which offers a CLTC range of 395 km, translating to an estimated real-world WLTP range exceeding 350 km. The upgrade aims to sustain the EX2’s success after it became China’s best-selling car in 2025, with over 465,000 units sold.
The Australian version of the EX2, previewed at the Melbourne Motor Show, will be built on Geely’s Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA) platform, which also underpins the EX5 SUV. It will feature a rear-wheel-drive setup, a multi-link independent rear suspension, and a liquid-cooled battery pack, with six colour options available to local buyers. Geely Australia has already marked a milestone by delivering its 10,000th vehicle within 14 months, signalling strong market demand ahead of the EX2’s arrival. Pricing is expected to be competitive, around the $30,000 mark, positioning the EX2 against rivals such as the BYD Dolphin, MG4 Urban EV, and GAC Aion UT.
Performance details from the EX2’s launch in Thailand reveal an 85 kW rear-mounted motor capable of accelerating from 0-50 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. The interior boasts one of the largest infotainment screens in its segment, featuring a 14.6-inch display with software similar to that found in the EX5 SUV. These features, combined with its efficient powertrain and improved range, make the EX2 an attractive proposition for buyers seeking an affordable and practical electric vehicle amid rising fuel costs.
Geely Australia’s managing director, Alex Gu, highlighted the significance of the brand’s rapid growth and the importance of delivering accessible new energy vehicles to local consumers. The EX2’s upcoming launch represents a strategic move to expand Geely’s footprint in the competitive Australian EV market. While final specifications and pricing will be confirmed closer to its release in the third quarter of 2026, the upgraded battery and established platform suggest the EX2 will be a strong contender in the affordable electric hatchback segment.
