An Post Reaches Emissions Milestone 3 Months Early

Ireland’s national postal service, An Post, has achieved a significant environmental milestone by reducing its carbon emissions by 50 percent compared to 2009 levels, reaching this target three months ahead of schedule. This accomplishment is particularly notable as it coincides with a 27 percent increase in parcel volume, with 73 million items delivered in 2025. The company’s latest Sustainability Report highlights its ongoing commitment to reducing emissions and increasing the use of green energy, positioning An Post as one of the first national postal carriers globally to halve its carbon footprint while simultaneously expanding its business. The original emissions reduction target was set for 2030 but was accelerated to 2025 in response to Ireland’s urgent climate goals. An Post services 2.5 million delivery points daily and up to one million customers weekly through its post offices, underpinning its wider environmental and social ambitions. The company’s fleet now consists of 55 percent electric or alternative fuel vehicles, with 575 new, larger electric vans introduced this year to replace older diesel and first-generation electric models. Additionally, 95 percent of heavy vehicles transitioned from diesel to renewable hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) in late 2025, a move that significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions and improves local air quality, although the cost of HVO remains higher than electricity. An Post’s sustainability efforts extend beyond its vehicle fleet to its buildings and circular economy initiatives. Nearly all of its buildings are powered by renewable energy, and its Dublin headquarters has achieved LEED Platinum status after reducing energy consumption by 250 MWh through improved heating and cooling systems. The company also leads in circular economy practices, facilitating the sale and donation of over five million clothing and household items via its digital platforms and post offices. These initiatives are integral to An Post’s Green Light strategy, which focuses on reuse, recycling, and decarbonising all aspects of its operations. Leadership at An Post emphasises that sustainability is an ongoing journey rather than a one-off achievement. CEO David McRedmond stressed the urgency of climate action amid increasing extreme weather events in Ireland and highlighted the company’s progress towards net-zero emissions by 2030. He also noted the importance of continuing to invest in infrastructure to support e-commerce and postal delivery, pending government approval. Owen Keogh, head of Sustainability, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the alignment of environmental goals with commercial growth and the need for precise, rapid progress to meet net-zero ambitions. An Post’s achievements stand in stark contrast to other postal services, particularly in the United States, where environmental progress faces greater political and operational challenges. By advancing sustainable practices across its fleet, buildings, and circular economy initiatives, An Post sets a leading example in the global postal sector, demonstrating that environmental responsibility and business growth can go hand in hand.
