All-New Scott Spark XC Bike Prototype in Nove Mesto Teases a Glimpse of Its Hidden Shock

Scott has unveiled a new prototype of its Scott Spark XC race bike during the World Cup in Nove Mesto, offering a fresh take on the brand’s well-known cross-country model. While the new design retains the core concept of an internal rear shock, it diverges significantly from previous iterations by featuring a partially exposed shock absorber. This subtle reveal hints at a novel suspension system, with the shock now oriented nearly horizontally within the frame, a departure from the more traditional alignment seen on the current model. The suspension layout itself appears to have evolved from the Spark’s established single-pivot design to a more complex four-bar linkage system. This includes an external short link positioned concentrically around the bottom bracket, combined with flex stays, which suggests a focus on improved handling and weight distribution. Although the frame conceals much of the mechanism, the presence of multiple access covers indicates that maintenance and battery access for the Flight Attendant electronic suspension system will be more straightforward than before, despite the increased mechanical complexity on the driveside. Beyond suspension, the prototype incorporates several other technical updates. Notably, it features a new seatpost clamp mechanism reminiscent of those found on road and gravel bikes, utilising an internal wedge-style expander for a cleaner finish and potentially lighter weight. The frame itself is constructed from Scott’s premium HMX SL carbon, emphasising the bike’s lightweight and high-performance intent. Additionally, the prototype is designed exclusively for 29-inch wheels, with no accommodation for the larger 32-inch size that has been gaining traction in elite cross-country racing. The wheel setup further underscores the bike’s race-focused nature, with the team employing two distinct sets of Syncros carbon wheels tailored to different race formats. For short-track XCC events, they used ultralight one-piece molded wheels, while the longer XCO races saw a new, conventionally laced carbon-spoked wheelset debut. Despite Scott-SRAM’s historical involvement in pushing 32-inch wheel development, the prototype’s exclusion of this size suggests that such technology remains in progress, particularly given the absence of a production-ready 32-inch RockShox SID fork, a key component for many professional teams. Overall, the new Scott Spark prototype signals a significant step forward in cross-country bike design, blending innovative suspension engineering with practical updates aimed at enhancing performance and serviceability.
