Interview: Antonio Tiveddu (Factory KRT technical manager)

Antonio Tiveddu plays a crucial role behind the scenes at the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP as the technical manager, ensuring the riders have everything they need to perform at their best. The team, led by former F1 driver Kimi Räikkönen and team manager Antti Pyrhönen, operates like a close-knit family with a dedicated group of around twenty staff members. Tiveddu’s extensive experience as both a former racer and mechanic has been instrumental in maintaining the team’s high standards and smooth operation throughout the demanding MXGP calendar. Tiveddu’s journey into motocross began in his childhood on the Italian island of Sardinia, inspired by his father’s passion for the sport. After progressing through local and national competitions, he briefly pursued a professional riding career before a knee injury prompted a shift in focus. Recognising his strengths in mechanics, he transitioned to working on bikes professionally, gaining valuable mentorship under renowned technician Iller Aldini before joining Kawasaki’s factory team in 2014. His progression from mechanic to chief mechanic and ultimately technical manager reflects his deep commitment and growing expertise within the sport. As technical manager, Tiveddu oversees the coordination of all technical aspects of the team, including bike preparation, engine tuning, suspension setup, and electronic mapping. He emphasises the importance of teamwork and communication within the tight-knit group, highlighting the challenges of constant travel and close living conditions during the world championship season. Maintaining a positive and professional atmosphere is key to their success, with Tiveddu describing the team as a “big family” that balances camaraderie with high performance. Looking ahead, the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP is preparing for the upcoming FIM MXGP world championship round in France at Lacapelle-Marival. With Tiveddu’s leadership on the technical side, the team aims to continue building on their strong foundation and deliver competitive results throughout the season.
