Specialized S-Works Evade 4 review: No more aero, but cooler and comfier

Summary By: eMotoX
Specialized’s latest iteration of its popular aero road helmet, the S-Works Evade 4, focuses less on outright aerodynamic gains and more on enhancing comfort and ventilation. Priced at $350, it costs $50 more than its predecessor but does not claim significant improvements in speed, with only a marginal aerodynamic advantage of less than half a watt according to the brand’s wind tunnel operator. Instead, the Evade 4 aims to maintain the excellent aero performance of the Evade 3 while delivering better cooling, boasting a 2.4% improvement in ventilation. The design of the Evade 4 revisits some features from the original Evade, including the return of the ‘MouthPort’ vent at the brow, which aids airflow, particularly for riders with longer hair. The helmet’s shape has been altered slightly, becoming shorter front to back but wider, which helps alleviate pressure points that some users experienced with earlier models. The rear exhaust vent has been significantly widened, inspired by Specialized’s TT5 helmet, contributing to the increased ventilation without compromising aerodynamic efficiency. Comfort and fit have seen thoughtful refinements, with the helmet now featuring a lighter, easier-to-adjust retention system similar to those on other high-end Specialized helmets. The introduction of the Boa FS2 dial system allows for a more even distribution of pressure around the head, improving overall comfort. Inside, the MIPS Air Node system has been upgraded to a larger ‘Air Node Pro’ version, which better manages sweat and moisture, enhancing the riding experience on longer or hotter rides. While the Evade 4 is slightly heavier than its predecessor by about 20 grams, this increase is unlikely to be noticeable in everyday use. Safety certifications have been met, though independent testing results are still awaited to provide a clearer picture of its protective capabilities relative to competitors. With the Evade 3 already recognised as one of the most aerodynamic helmets tested, the Evade 4’s retention of similar aero credentials combined with improved comfort and ventilation positions it as a compelling choice for riders prioritising these features over marginal speed gains.
