Unbound Gravel organisers rein in support station chaos, adding feed zones for elite fields only

Summary By: eMotoX
The organisers of Unbound Gravel have introduced significant changes to the 2026 edition of the iconic 207-mile race to improve safety and streamline support for elite riders. For the first time in the event’s two-decade history, separate Feed Zones will be established exclusively for professional competitors, distinct from the Checkpoints used by age-group participants. This adjustment aims to reduce the previous chaos that arose when elite and amateur riders shared the same support areas, often leading to congestion and logistical challenges during critical moments on the course. The new layout includes three designated Feed Zones for elite riders positioned at strategic points along the route: Madison, Cassoday, and near Council Grove. These zones will operate under strict guidelines to enhance safety and fairness, such as feeding only from the right side and prohibiting support from moving vehicles. The Checkpoints for amateur riders remain in place but are now clearly separated from the elite Feed Zones, allowing both groups to access support without interference. This change also coincides with the addition of a third Checkpoint along the typically hot and demanding Flint Hills terrain. Professional riders have welcomed the introduction of exclusive Feed Zones, highlighting the benefits for race efficiency and competitive integrity. Keegan Swenson, the 2023 Unbound 200 champion, praised the extra feed opportunity for reducing the need to carry excessive supplies, which can slow riders and increase the risk of losing bottles or nutrition. Swenson also pointed out the fairness aspect, noting that larger riders like his teammate Matt Beers require more sustenance, which is difficult to carry without additional support. The changes are expected to make the race faster, safer, and more spectator-friendly, especially with the event now being live-streamed. The implementation of these Feed Zones reflects a broader trend in gravel racing towards professionalisation and enhanced race management. Life Time, the event organiser, has also planned to introduce similar zones at other races within the Life Time Grand Prix series, including the Leadville Trail 100 MTB. By separating elite and amateur support areas, the organisers aim to protect competitive integrity, reduce congestion, and improve the overall experience for all participants. These developments signal a new era for Unbound Gravel as it continues to grow in prestige and complexity within the gravel racing calendar.
