Tesla’s Former AI Lead Goes To Anthropic

Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s former head of artificial intelligence, has joined Anthropic, a leading AI research company known for developing the large language model Claude. Karpathy, who played a pivotal role in Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) programme, left the electric vehicle giant in July 2022 after years of leading its AI efforts. His departure came at a time when Tesla’s FSD technology was still far from the fully autonomous vision that had been widely anticipated, with the company repeatedly revising its software approach since his exit. Karpathy’s tenure at Tesla was marked by optimism about the potential for achieving full autonomy, a sentiment he expressed even as challenges mounted. Despite his confidence in Tesla’s AI strategy, the reality of deploying reliable robotaxis proved elusive, which many speculate contributed to his decision to move on. Notably, Karpathy has maintained a professional relationship with Tesla and Elon Musk, who has publicly indicated that the door remains open for his return, highlighting Karpathy’s enduring reputation in the AI community. Before and after his time at Tesla, Karpathy was closely involved with OpenAI, another major player in artificial intelligence research.
