Porsche Shuts Down Fazua & Its E-Bike Division, Specialized Drops Turbo Levo Prices, CPSC Issues Two Helmet Recalls | TWR Ep 83

Summary By: eMotoX
Porsche has announced the closure of its e-bike division and the Fazua motor company, citing significant shifts in the market for e-bike drive systems. This decision follows Porsche’s recent sale of its stake in Bugatti Rimac and reflects a strategic refocusing on its core automotive business. Despite previously planning to open a battery factory in Croatia, the company has opted to exit the e-bike sector amid declining sales across Europe. According to industry data, e-bike sales dropped by around 5% in 2023, with further decreases reported in key markets such as the UK, France, and Spain during 2024. The closure raises concerns for current Fazua motor users, but Porsche has assured customers and dealers that long-term access to spare parts and servicing will continue. However, the longevity of this support remains uncertain, as similar promises from other brands have not always been fully honoured. The move is not entirely unexpected given Porsche’s relatively minor role in the e-bike market and increasing competition from manufacturers offering more powerful and affordable motors, such as Amflow. In a related development, Specialized has permanently reduced prices across its entire Turbo Levo e-MTB range, with discounts ranging from 6% to 27%. The top-tier Turbo Levo R S-Works model, for example, has seen its price cut from $15,650 to $11,500. Specialized attributes the price adjustment to operational efficiencies and heightened competition, aiming to attract more riders while maintaining sustainable margins. Customers who purchased a Turbo Levo earlier this year are eligible for a credit covering part or all of the price difference, valid until the end of June. Safety concerns have also emerged with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission issuing recalls for approximately 3,000 helmets sold through Amazon and Temu. These Favoto H-1 helmets, primarily youth-sized, fail to meet mandatory safety standards and may not provide adequate protection in crashes. Affected consumers are advised to stop using the helmets immediately and seek refunds. Meanwhile, e-bike safety education is receiving a boost as PeopleForBikes and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation offer their e-bike safety course free throughout May, providing riders with essential knowledge on road rules and practical skills.
