Mercedes-Benz says electric variants of its CLA compact sedan coming to Australia

Mercedes-Benz has announced the arrival of its new CLA compact sedan range in Australia, featuring a total of five variants that include two fully electric models alongside three mild hybrid options. The electric lineup comprises the CLA 200 electric and the CLA 350 4MATIC electric, both built on a new modular platform designed to accommodate hybrid and battery-electric drivetrains. The announcement follows the CLA’s recent accolade as the “Car of the Year 2026” by the European Car of the Year jury, signalling strong anticipation for the model’s Australian debut. The CLA 200 electric is powered by a 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery paired with a 165 kW rear motor, delivering 335 Nm of torque and a WLTP-rated range of 470 kilometres. Meanwhile, the more powerful CLA 350 4MATIC electric features an additional 80 kW motor on the front axle, producing a combined 260 kW and 515 Nm, with acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and an impressive 663-kilometre range. Both electric variants utilise an advanced 800-volt electrical system capable of DC fast charging at up to 320 kW, compatible with 400-volt chargers and equipped with a DC converter as standard for the Australian market. Safety and comfort have been prioritised in the new CLA, which boasts a low drag coefficient of 0.21, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency. The vehicle is fitted with advanced driver assistance systems and a robust body structure, including a centre airbag positioned between the front seats—a first for Mercedes-Benz’s compact segment. The CLA was awarded a five-star rating in the 2025 Euro NCAP tests, excelling in occupant protection and safety assistance, further underlining its commitment to passenger safety. Inside, the CLA offers a suite of premium features as standard, such as a fixed panoramic glass roof with heat-insulating laminated safety glass, heated front seats, ambient lighting, wireless charging, and facial recognition technology. Pricing for the Australian market starts at $66,500 for the entry-level CLA 180, rising to $91,300 for the top-tier CLA 350 4MATIC electric, reflecting the model’s positioning as a competitive luxury compact sedan with a strong emphasis on electrification. Mercedes-Benz’s introduction of the CLA electric and hybrid models to Australia marks a significant step in expanding its electric vehicle portfolio in the region.
