Alsym Partners With Juniper For 500 MWh Of Sodium-Ion Grid-Scale Battery Storage

Alsym Energy has announced a significant partnership with Juniper Energy to deploy 500 MWh of sodium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) across California and neighbouring states. This collaboration marks a pivotal move away from traditional lithium-ion batteries, which have been associated with fire risks, towards safer, more thermally resilient sodium-ion technology. The deployment will focus on high-temperature regions such as the Mojave Desert, where Alsym’s batteries can operate efficiently without the need for energy-intensive active cooling systems. Sodium-ion batteries have recently emerged from experimental stages to large-scale production, offering several advantages over conventional lithium-ion chemistries. Unlike nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, which have a higher propensity for fires as seen in the 2023 Moss Landing incident, sodium-ion batteries are virtually immune to thermal runaway. Alsym’s CEO Mukesh Chatter highlighted that their sodium-ion cells can operate comfortably at ambient temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius, outperforming lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that must be shut down at around 43 degrees Celsius due to heat sensitivity. Moreover, Alsym’s cells are set to achieve UL 9540A certification, a rigorous safety standard for fire propagation in battery storage systems that LFP batteries cannot meet. The partnership between Alsym and Juniper Energy is designed to enhance the safety, cost-effectiveness, and operational flexibility of grid-scale energy storage. Alsym’s sodium-ion batteries utilise passive cooling, which significantly reduces both upfront capital expenditure and ongoing maintenance costs compared to lithium-ion systems that require active cooling to prevent overheating. The high charge and discharge rates also allow for multiple daily cycles, enabling operators to generate revenue through load shifting and other grid services without premature battery degradation. Strategically, the collaboration leverages Alsym’s domestically sourced and manufactured battery cells to maximise financial incentives such as the One Big Beautiful Bill tax credits and Department of Energy support. This domestic supply chain provides Juniper with a “lithium-free” hedge against global supply chain disruptions and environmental concerns linked to rare metal mining. As California continues to lead the US energy transition, the deployment of sodium-ion batteries by Alsym and Juniper represents a promising step towards safer, more sustainable, and economically viable grid storage solutions.
