Interview: Sylvain Geboers reflects on Ken Roczen’s rise from MX2 sensation to Supercross champion

Ken Roczen’s journey from a promising MX2 Grand Prix rookie to an AMA Supercross champion has been marked by exceptional talent, determination, and resilience, as reflected upon by Sylvain Geboers, the legendary Belgian team boss who played a pivotal role in Roczen’s early career. Roczen burst onto the scene in 2009 at just fifteen years old, quickly establishing himself as a fearless and mature competitor. His breakthrough win that same year electrified German fans and signalled the arrival of a future star, setting the stage for his eventual move to the United States to pursue Supercross glory. Geboers detailed the meticulous preparation behind Roczen’s integration into the Suzuki MX2 team, highlighting the collaborative efforts between Suzuki Germany and the racing staff to provide tailored support. The team was carefully structured to nurture Roczen’s development, focusing on enjoyment and steady progress rather than immediate results. This patient approach paid off, with Roczen delivering one of Suzuki’s most memorable MX2 victories and becoming a beacon of hope for German motocross enthusiasts. Despite Roczen’s early success with Suzuki, his switch to KTM was a difficult moment for the team, as he was their standout talent and the only rider capable of winning at that level. Geboers acknowledged the challenges Suzuki faced in replacing him and the ongoing support for emerging riders. However, it is Roczen’s remarkable resilience through numerous injuries that has truly defined his career, with Geboers expressing admiration for his unwavering determination to return to peak form and ultimately claim the coveted AMA Supercross title. Reflecting on Roczen’s achievements, Geboers praised the rider’s dedication and the collaborative efforts of the HEP team and Suzuki in realising a dream that had been years in the making. Although their contact diminished after Roczen’s move to America, Geboers remains grateful for the trust Roczen placed in Suzuki and hopes that his story, including the sacrifices behind his success, will be fully told in the future. Geboers also looked back on his own extensive career in motocross, expressing a desire to see Suzuki return to world championship competition, a move he believes would enrich the sport despite the challenges ahead.
