Tesla Sold Only 173 RWD Cybertrucks In Two Years
Summary By: eMotoX
Tesla has sold a surprisingly low number of rear-wheel drive (RWD) Cybertrucks over the past two years, with only 173 units recorded. This figure emerged following a recent recall issued due to a potential safety issue involving the wheels, which could pose a risk of detachment under certain driving conditions. While the Cybertruck has amassed roughly 43,000 sales overall, the RWD variant has clearly been a niche choice, with most buyers opting for the all-wheel drive versions.
The recall affects Cybertrucks manufactured between March 2024 and November 2025 that were equipped with 18-inch steel wheels. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlighted that road impacts and cornering forces might cause cracks in the wheel rotor stud holes, potentially leading to wheel studs separating from the hub. Although no accidents or injuries have been reported so far, three warranty claims linked to this issue have been filed, prompting Tesla to offer free repairs to affected owners.
Tesla has committed to replacing the front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts on the recalled vehicles at no cost, either at service centres or via mobile service visits. This proactive approach aims to mitigate any risks before they escalate, reassuring owners of the company’s dedication to safety despite the limited scale of the recall. The rarity of the RWD Cybertruck and the subsequent withdrawal of this option reflect shifting consumer preferences and Tesla’s evolving product strategy.
The low sales figures for the RWD Cybertruck contrast sharply with Elon Musk’s initial expectations, which projected annual sales of around 250,000 units. Despite early hype and over a million reservations at one point, the Cybertruck’s market performance has been underwhelming, with a significant portion of sales reportedly going to affiliated companies like SpaceX. This situation underscores the challenges Tesla faces in translating initial interest into sustained consumer demand for its electric pickup offering.
