Freak illness catches up with Arnaud De Lie and forces him out of Giro d'Italia

Arnaud De Lie’s promising start to the Giro d’Italia was abruptly halted due to a persistent illness that forced the Lotto-Intermarché rider to abandon the race during stage 4. De Lie had been struggling since the race began, with symptoms traced back to a stomach infection contracted after winning the Famenne Ardenne Classic in Belgium the previous week. The illness, believed to be campylobacter linked to cow manure on the race route, severely impacted his performance, leaving him unable to contest sprints or climbs effectively. The Belgian rider’s condition deteriorated despite efforts to recover during the rest day between the Bulgarian and Italian stages. Although many sprinters were dropped on the challenging Cozzo Tunno climb, De Lie’s withdrawal was confirmed when he climbed into his team car mid-stage. This came after a series of struggles, including a 155th place finish on stage 2 and being caught behind a crash on the opening day, signalling that his health was far from race-ready. This outbreak of illness affected multiple riders, with Lotto-Intermarché also losing Liam Slock from their Giro squad and Milan Menten battling the same infection but continuing to race. The unusual circumstances surrounding the infection, reportedly caused by rain spreading contaminated manure across the roads, have raised concerns about rider safety and race conditions. The incident has deprived Lotto-Intermarché of their leading contender for a stage victory, a significant blow to their ambitions in the Giro. Despite the setback, De Lie remains focused on future goals, particularly the Tour de France, which he was always expected to prioritise over the latter mountainous stages of the Giro. Reflecting on his condition, De Lie admitted that his health worsened significantly during the transfer to Bulgaria, marking one of the toughest challenges of his career.
