Scania unveils fully battery electric concrete mixer truck, that powers the mixer system too
Summary By: eMotoX
Swedish manufacturer Scania has introduced a fully battery electric concrete mixer truck, marking a significant advancement in the electrification of heavy construction vehicles. Developed in collaboration with Danish concrete supplier Unicon and German concrete technology firm Liebherr-Mischtechnik, the truck is already in operation with Unicon, highlighting its readiness for commercial deployment. This new electric mixer truck is designed to meet the demanding requirements of concrete transport, a sector traditionally seen as difficult to electrify due to its high energy consumption and the need to power auxiliary equipment such as the concrete mixer drum.
The vehicle features a 400 kWh battery and incorporates an electric power take-off (ePTO) system that directly powers the concrete mixer from the truck’s battery, eliminating the need for a separate power source. Over a three-year development period, the partners have ensured the truck can handle real-world conditions, including off-road driving and continuous mixing, with an operational range of approximately 200 kilometres. This integration of the electric mixer system with the truck’s powertrain represents a comprehensive solution to the unique challenges posed by concrete transport.
Tobias Ejderhamn, Scania’s global manager of transformation and new business, emphasised the broader implications of the project, stating that electrification can extend beyond standard vehicle applications to more demanding sectors. He highlighted the company’s modular electric platform and close collaboration with customers as key factors enabling a viable path towards zero-emission transport in heavy-duty use cases. This approach underlines Scania’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric mobility within industrial and construction environments.
Unicon’s response to the innovation has been positive, with the company placing an order for an additional ten electric mixer trucks and setting a target to achieve emission-free concrete transport by 2035. Christian Elleby, Unicon’s supply chain and procurement director, stressed that the electric mixer truck is not merely a pilot project but a practical solution intended for daily operational use and future scaling. This development signals a growing momentum in the construction industry towards sustainable transport solutions, potentially influencing broader adoption of electric commercial vehicles in similar sectors.
