Volkswagen Celebrates 50 Years of GTI: World Premiere of the Electric ID. Polo GTI at the 24h Nürburgring

Volkswagen is marking the 50th anniversary of its iconic GTI badge with a high-profile celebration at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring race in May 2026. Central to the festivities is the world premiere of the ID. Polo GTI, the first fully electric model to carry the GTI name. This unveiling signals a significant milestone for Volkswagen, combining the brand’s rich GTI heritage with its commitment to electrification, and takes place in front of a large crowd at the Nürburgring’s Ring-Boulevard. Alongside the electric debut, Volkswagen is fielding three Golf GTI Clubsport 24h cars in the endurance race, each sporting a special “50 Years of GTI” livery. The vehicles have been upgraded for enhanced reliability and performance, featuring improvements such as active gearbox cooling and lightweight carbon fibre components to keep the weight down to 1,200 kg. These GTI Clubsport cars will compete in different classes, with a strong driver lineup that includes experienced racers and notable personalities like former German footballer Max Kruse, aiming to secure a class victory for the third consecutive year. The Nürburgring event will also showcase Volkswagen’s broader performance portfolio, including a Golf R 24H show car that previews the brand’s 2027 race car. A parade of around 40 GTI models from all eight generations is planned, highlighting the evolution of the GTI over five decades. This blend of historic and future-focused vehicles underscores Volkswagen’s dedication to maintaining the GTI’s sporty legacy while embracing new technologies. Volkswagen’s participation at Germany’s largest motorsport event, which attracts around 280,000 spectators, emphasises the importance of the GTI brand in both motorsport and enthusiast communities. The use of innovative E20 fuel in the race cars, derived largely from renewable sources, also reflects Volkswagen’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions in competitive racing. The anniversary celebrations and race campaign collectively demonstrate the brand’s strategy to balance tradition with sustainability as it moves forward in the electric era.
