While not a fully in-house endeavour, this joint venture aims to bring advanced, low-cost solid-state lidar production to the US, mitigating risks related to tariffs and supply chain monopolies. Scaringe emphasised that significant lidar advancements have predominantly occurred in China, and Rivian’s approach reflects a broader industry trend of carmakers seeking greater control over critical autonomous vehicle components.
This development aligns with Rivian’s recent announcement to produce its own chips, signalling a concerted effort to internalise key technologies and reduce reliance on external suppliers. The introduction of lidar-equipped R2 models would mark a significant step forward in Rivian’s autonomous driving capabilities, setting it apart from competitors like Tesla, which does not utilise lidar technology.
